Westwood College returns from a thrilling international sports trip

Mozambique

The Westwood College recently returned from an unforgettable international sports trip to
Mozambique (Beira), where they competed against top-tier teams in basketball, soccer,
volleyball, netball and immersed themselves in a unique cultural experience. It was an exciting
experience for teachers and learners from 15 – 17 August 2024.

The team left for Mozambique through Forbes Border Post on the 15th of September. It was an
exhilarating travelling experience with learners enjoying the scenery view of the majestic
Christmas Pass mountainous areas. The following day was a hive of activities. Our prepared
learners played soccer against Shining Lords International School and emerged victorious. They
crashed, thrushed and thwarted their antagonist to a whooping 5-2. This set a precedence and
speaking volumes of our proficiency as a college. In the volleyball clash, our team proved to be
indomitable. We outclassed them in the 2 sets. As if this was not enough, we did exceptionally
well in netball where our team won 15-10. A close contest was in basketball. Our girls team was
slightly close to victory beaten by 15 points to 13. Nevertheless, the boys revenged the loss by
winning 17-10 over Beira International School.

The experience was bustling with energetic performances, dances and melodious singing. Our
soccer captain Nomore Wushe who led the soccer team to victory commented, “I gained
invaluable experience competing against diverse playing styles.” The same sentiments and wits
were also echoed by Kim Mugabe, our basketball team captain, “The trip taught me resilience,
adaptability and teamwork”. The visibly jubilant and exaltant soccer coach Mr Mataruse
commented, “Westwood College team displayed exceptional spirit and sportsmanship
throughout the trip.” As the learners continued in jubilation, whistling and ululation and inept
opponents could not bear the pressure exerted on them. “International competition pushed us
to elevate our game” said Mr Nhema –the Sports Director of Westwood College.

We ended the day after having three guided tours exploring Beira Amusement Park, the market
and Praia do Chiveve Beach. Our teachers and learners had fun time in boat cruising, bike
riding, fishing and boat rowing. The excursion to the market: though we had language barriers
to buy and spend proved to be an eye opener. The visit to Praia do Chiveve: a popular beach
with calm waters, ideal for swimming and relaxation capped the day. Our Chairperson: Mrs
Chizema shared her thoughts during a mouth-watering supper saying “The cultural exchange is
eye-opening for our players” hence there is need to embark on more international trips. As a
college, we believe in exposing our learners to real world experience and pracademics. The
laughters and chatters rolled well into the night.

The following day was punctuated by cleaning frenzy, bathing, packing, ready to depart to
Harare. We arrived at Westwood College around sunset. Our esteemed parents could not hide
their joy thanking the college for such an unforgettable international trip. “Westwood College
munodadisa and munogona zvamaita izvi zvetrip yekuenda kunze kwenyika ngazvirambe
zvichiitwa. Makapa vana vedu mufaro wakanyanyisa” said Mrs Jamba (a parent to Ryan Jamba
in Form 4).

Your future with Westwood College is bright. We will make all our endeavours successful. For
instance, a Zanzibar trip is on the cards scheduled for early next year. The Principal of the
College: Mr Masangomai the brains behind the trip was contented by the success of the trip,
“The trip was seamlessly organised, ensuring smooth experience.”
